Trial Begins Amidst Serious Allegations
The trial against French actor Gérard Depardieu regarding accusations of sexual assault has officially started. The 76-year-old actor made his way into the crowded Paris courtroom, slightly supported by his lawyer. Defense attorney Jérémie Assous addressed the media stating, „All allegations are false.“ He expressed confidence in proving their case, asserting, „The truth is on our side.“
Health Issues Prompt Delay
Initially scheduled for October, the trial was postponed due to concerns over the defendant’s health. Medical evaluations have indicated that Depardieu can only participate in the hearings for six hours each day, with mandatory 15-minute breaks in between sessions.
Specific Allegations from Film Set
The case centers on accusations of sexual harassment during the filming of the movie Les volets verts (The Green Shutters) directed by Jean Becker in 2021. A set decorator and a production assistant have accused Depardieu of inappropriately touching them, specifically on their breasts and buttocks. The actor faces potential sentences of up to five years in prison and fines of 75,000 euros. Depardieu has vehemently denied the allegations.
Ongoing Accusations and Public Interest
For years, several women have come forward with accusations against Depardieu regarding sexual misconduct. This marks the first time he has had to answer these claims in a court of law. The case has garnered significant attention in France, with dozens demonstrating outside the courthouse in support of the accusers. Depardieu completely refutes the allegations, claiming to be a victim of a „media lynching.“ In an article for Le Figaro, he stated, „Never, never have I abused a woman.“
